Lesson 3: Pick one niche (decision sheet)

A niche is the kind of client you serve, combined with the service you sell. “Inbox and calendar for independent real-estate agents” is a niche. “Admin help for anyone” is not.

Why one niche

You can change niches later. Picking one now is a test, not a lifetime promise.

The decision sheet

Score each candidate niche from 1 (weak) to 5 (strong) on six questions. Use only what you know. If you do not know, write ”?” and find out in Lesson 13.

QuestionWhy it matters
1. Do I already understand this client’s day?Less to learn before you are useful
2. Is their work seasonal or steady?Steady work gives steady tasks
3. Do they use tools I can learn in a week?Lowers start-up time
4. Can I reach them (groups, directories, people I know)? You need a way to be seen
5. Do they hire help already?Shows the need is real
6. Would I be comfortable doing this work most weeks? You must keep going

Add the scores. A niche below 18 out of 30 is not ready. Keep testing, or change the service.

Worked example

Candidate A: independent real-estate agents, inbox and calendar. Scores: 4, 4, 4, 3, 4, 4 = 23. Candidate B: online course creators, content scheduling. Scores: 2, 3, 4, 2, 3, 3 = 17. Pick A. The sheet also shows what to learn next for B if she chooses it later (question 1, 2 and 4 are weak).

Red flags in a niche

Practice task (about 30 minutes)

Score three candidate niches with the sheet. Circle the highest score. Write one sentence: “I help [type of client] with [service].” Keep it for Lesson 4.

This lesson helps you choose. It does not promise that any niche will bring clients or income.
